John is the only Court Appointed Appraiser specialising in the valuation of thoroughbreds in South Africa. He performs numerous valuations each year for court process, estate purposes and for owners wanting to understand of the value of their horses or to dissolve partnerships.

During the Epol horse food poisoning crisis in the early 80’s John appeared on a panel of “experts” to value the damaged horses and acted as an appraiser in the ensuing court-cases which led to him being registered to perform appraisals.

John has appeared as an expert witness in dozens of court cases and has performed hundreds of valuations in the past 20 years.

The following is a reference to his registration as an appraiser in respect of valuations on bloodstock:

John served as a Director of the Cape Chapter of Gold Circle from its inception until his retirement from the board in December 2008. He served as a director of the main Board of Gold Circle Racing and Gaming (Pty) Ltd. He is a trustee and nominee of organisations within the racing and breeding structures in South Africa. He served on the board of the Western Province Owners and Trainers Association for six years and as the Owner's representative on behalf of The National Federation of Owners and Trainers on the South African Horse Import / Export Council for 4 years. He has been a member of the Jockey Club of South Africa for 34 years and was awarded Life Colours by that organisation in 2007. John was the BBA representative for Africa from 1998 until the business was sold in 2005. John has enjoyed global representation in the thoroughbred industry with access to the most professionally informed and respected horsemen in the world.

Over the last 34 years John has served in various offices in the racing and breeding industry:- as Chairman of the Agents Association of South Africa, Deputy Chairman of the Transvaal Owners and Trainers Assn, Chairman of the WP Racing Groom’s Trust and as Managing Director of The Thoroughbred Group – this entity functioned as a horse auction company and also owned the biggest horse specific Insurance Brokerage in South Africa. He has been the single biggest buyer of horses at auction in South Africa for over 27 years and is presently retained by several of the leading owners and breeders in South Africa as an advisor.

John has active, daily participation in the Bloodstock market as a consultant and attends most Bloodstock Sales in South Africa as well as various sales abroad each year. John has up-to-date experience of trends in the thoroughbred market by concluding private treaty sales regularly.

His valuation decisions are based on what a rational market would expect to pay and valuations are often tested at public sales.

Though the thoroughbred industry in South Africa appears recession proof the middle to lower end of the market is where decline in prices will seem most evident. This pressure will grow worse by the time the next breeding season arrives.
